The author argues for a holistic approach to oral interpretation: The necessity of obtaining sufficient preinformation about the conference situation, speakers and hearers is exemplified. The importance of paralinguistic and nonverbal phenomena in the `decoding’ and `recoding’ of speech performances is stressed and illustrated by a series of photos taken from a video in which an actor changes the meaning of a text by using different mimics, gestures and body postures. – The complete video (approx. 10 mn.) is available on demand from Julius Groos Verlag.
